There’s lots to enjoy in Wyre this ‘Love Parks Week’

 Love Parks Week begins tomorrow, Friday 13 July and there’s lots going on in Wyre to celebrate.

Kicking off the programme of events is The BFG outdoor theatre performance in Memorial Park, Fleetwood on Saturday 14 July. Presented by the Gambolling Arena Theatre Company there’s two shows to enjoy at 11.30am and 2pm. There’s no need to book and the performances are free – don’t forget to bring along a picnic to enjoy as you watch the show.

If wildlife is more your thing, there’s a squirrel’s watch group taking place on Saturday 14 July at Wyre Estuary Country Park. Running from 10am – noon this environmental group is perfect for those aged eight to 14 and includes nature walks, wildlife surveys, practical work and lots of fun! It’s just £1 per child.

On Saturday 21 July (1pm – 3pm) at Memorial Park and Sunday 22 July (11am – 3pm) at Wyre Estuary Country Park, children can take part in Xplorer orienteering. Using a simple map this family friendly navigation trail challenges you to find markers around the park, identify what is pictured and learn fun facts, all for 50p per child.

On Sunday 22 July there’s a mosaic garden art community workshop at Memorial Park from noon to 3pm. Join the Memorial Park gardening club volunteers for the first of many mosaic community workshops to create garden artwork for their planters. There’s 11 mosaic designs to craft, to decorate the demonstration garden at the park. The event is free, just come along to the pavilion for a relaxing afternoon and to learn a new skill. On the same day the team at Memorial Park are also leading a big butterfly hunt from 1pm – 3pm, come along and see how many butterflies you can count.

Rounding things up with a full day of fun is the open day at Wyre Estuary Country Park on Sunday 22 July from 11am – 4pm. There’s plenty going on at this much loved annual event. There’s information and displays including the homeless hounds, bee keeping, flyball, the squirrel wildlife watch group and Wyre’s volunteering, plus there’s the play areas and woodlands to explore. Entry is free, but some activities may be chargeable.

Councillor Simon Bridge, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, Parks and Open Spaces comments ‘We are lucky to have some beautiful parks and green open spaces on our doorstep and we know how important these areas are to our local community. Here at Wyre we have made a conscious effort to protect our parks and open spaces budget, at the same time as securing additional grant funding and investing Section 106 money into our parks. Our parks provide a real opportunity for local people to improve their health and wellbeing. Whether they take part in an event or club, take up a volunteering role, have fun with the family on the play equipment or enjoy using the outdoor fitness equipment we are installing, these spaces give people the chance to get outside and get active for free. Hosting these events throughout Love Parks Week gives us the chance to showcase our parks and allows everyone to celebrate these beautiful spots in Wyre.’

Love Parks Week takes place every year with the aim of encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy their favourite park. By using and celebrating your local park, we can all join together to help protect them for future generations.
